Since Texas is often hot during the summer months, this family friendly water park is a great place to cool down by staying wet. The water park has about 12 acres of land with 11 different water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, an activity pool and an interactive water tree house.
The Spring Creek Forest Preserve is right next to the water park. This county-owned park features a forest with wide spring streams that flow over solid limestone beds. The preserve has a large area of undeveloped land as well as plenty of recreational areas, all of which are wonderfully preserved and maintained.
Historic Downtown Garland is one of the most entertaining portions of the city. The historic downtown area has been selected as one of the top ten downtown squares in the state. Garland has also been nationally recognized as a Main Street City. You can find many historic and beautiful buildings in the area as well as restaurants, landmarks and wonderful attractions.
When you are ready to learn about the history of the area, you can spend a little time in the Landmark Museum. This museum has artifacts on display from early settlers in the area. You will see newspapers, farm utensils, quilts and even an antique rail car. The museum is only open on the first Saturday of the month so you need to plan your visit ahead of time.
The city also has many event venues such as the Patty Granville Arts Center. This center has two theaters, both of which host a wide array of events every year. The center also has meeting rooms, a ballroom and many other facilities. The Garland Opry is the longest running opry in the state. Visitors can watch live gospel and country music performances every week.
When you are ready to get back to nature, Lake Ray Hubbard is a wonderful fishing area that is well stocked with bass, crappie and catfish. There are picnic sites around the lake as well as plenty of launch ramps for boats.
If you would rather explore the larger city of Dallas, there are plenty of attractions to consider. Most visitors want to take a tour of the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza. This museum sits in the Texas School Book Depository, the building from which Lee Harvey Oswald fired at President John F. Kennedy. The museum also holds plenty of information about the life and times of JFK including the drama and conspiracy theories that surround his death.
The Dallas Zoo is worth an afternoon of your time during your stay in the area as well. This zoo is the oldest in Texas. It was created in 1888, but has undergone many renovations over the years. You will find many amazing animals in the 95-acre park.

The Art Deco buildings on the grounds were created for a state Centennial Exposition in 1936 and they have since been recognized as National Historic Landmarks. Fair Park is a great place to visit any time of the year, but it is especially popular during the state fair in September and October.
It is easy to get caught up in all of the attractions Dallas has to offer, but many tourists and business professionals enjoy relaxing back in Garland as well. The smaller city has plenty to see and do and has an added element of comfort.
